Q. when I log in it only show food stamp not cash i'm just wandering if I could use the ebt food stamp card to get cash to help pay my rent? and also can I only buy food or can I get soap, cleaning supplies, ect.?

Why can't stores type in my EBT (Food Stamp) card number if the card doesn't slide?
Q. I live in Arizona. Yesterday, I purchased some food at Walgreens with my EBT card. The card doesn't swipe, so I needed the cashier to type in the number. The manager said she couldn't, and there was a reason for it, but she never told me what it was. This same thing has ahppened to me at Target, too. Why is this? What is the law that says they can't type in in the number?

A. When I was going to the AMC Prommenade 20 Movie theatre I saw a Fresh Meat/ poultry place that accepted EBT. I can't remember the street - I was on the 933 bus - It stops right in front of it. A. Yes, anything that is not already heated or ready to eat is able to be purchased with the card. Foods that can't be purchased would be a heated up rotisserie chicken with all of the sides that they have in the deli. Things like that. Anything that's already prepared.

what do you have to do to keep your Food Stamp /EBT privelges going past the 5 months?

how to buy grocery with EBT card (food stamp) in MD?
Q. My parents just got the EBT card (food stamp only) and they want to find out how to buy grocery at the store. I know food stamp is for food only, but can you mix in the paper products, cleaning products, etc that's not food and check everything out at the same time? Like they will run the EBT card first, and then whatever is rejected will have another amount where my parents can then use a normal credit card? Or do you have to separate the items out yourself and have two checkouts, one for food only and another for other products? Thanks!

A. Everything can be rung up at the same time and the grocery store's computer system will separate food products from non-food. The EBT card will be used like a debit card (i.e. swipe it and enter PIN). In my past experiences, even smaller grocers can separate the items. Just make sure that when going grocery shopping, the store has a little sticker that says something to the effect of "we accept food stamps."

A. I have noticed that many stores have a yellow sign at the entrance on a window or sliding glass door where it says they take EBT cards. Most big grocery stores do. As far as I remember, you can't buy ready made food (cooked) or cigarettes or alcohol (obviously). Most other foods are OK. I never ran into a problem. Was there any particular food you were concerned about?

A. You can use food stamps to buy any food or beverages for human consumption except hot, cooked foods. You can use the card at any store that accepts it. The stores are supposed to post a sign at the front entrance stating that they accept it. Yes, leftover benefits (if there are any) will roll over to next month. You should have received brochures and paperwork from the welfare department explaining all of this. Why do you refuse to read them?

A. they would count all income in the household, so you won't be eligible being your parents aren't if you say you pay rent and can provide proof of this however you will need to have your own fridge and stove away from your parents' for proof, you need proof of income, bills, id, s.s. card, and lease or other document stating where you live and or if you pay rent they are strict and only the poor, very poor are eligible

A. contact the social services department for your area. In San Diego its the county health and human services department that handles it. Or find the nearest office and go down there. You are going to have to fill out a lot of paperwork. Make sure to bring ID, a months pay stubs, rent and utility receipts, and if you have expenses for taking care of a child they are going to want to know that also.

A. Hmm - good question. Call the issuing agency (probably a DSHS place in your area) and they will have the answer. But I bet that what you heard is correct - my EBT card has the words 'Washington State' emblazoned on the front of it, which leads me to believe that it wouldn't be accepted in say Oregon or California.
