What are the stereotypes of the Food Stamp program and the people using it?
Q. I'm doing a really small sociology project where a part of it is to discuss the stereotypes of the food stamp program. I;ve come across some sentiments that those using SNAP (the new name for the program) are dirty, uncaring, loud people with entitlement issues. Please keep in mind that these are not my opinions. I'm curious though, what stereotypes do you have of the Food Stamp program and the people using it?

A. The stereotypes that uses this program are people that are in need. Needy people come in all colors. I can attest to the fact that were I am located at there are more caucasians on ebt than blacks. I say that only because statistics shows this and the numbers do not lie. I have no problem with anyone that needs help It is there for that reason. Good Luck!

A. Food stamps is a program where the US gov't provides money to the states which in turn is given to poor people in the form of food stamps. Poor people can use food stamps to buy most of the things you will find in a supermarket. Instead of using their own money - they use food stamps. The supermarket then turns the food stamps into the state gov't for cash. In the past - they really were stamps - now most states uses debit type cards - so the bill is paid directly by the state to the supermarket. The grocery store gets a paying customer who buys more than they would if they only used their own money. 35 million Americans were on food stamps in June 2009 - so it is a huge customer base for grocery stores. Q. I am trying to apply for food stamps and am not sure if my car payment, car insurance, and health insurance count towards my utilities. I really need these stamps, until my employers can give me more work hours, so I want to give as much detailed information as possible on my food stamp application, without filling it our incorrectly. A. Utilities are things like electric, gas/oil, water, and possibly phone service... Unfortunately, things like car payments and insurance are practical matters, but not usually considered part of the 'budget' - There are other factors that they consider in factoring in how much you get foodstamps; they will be taking a look at the amount of income you do have/bring in; how much you pay for your shelter costs; and from there, they decide the amount according to their scale, how much you get... I don't think food stamps would ruin your credit... I think not paying your bills effects your credit; fs are necessary when the funds are low... and should not count against you... interesting question though... ask your case worker...

Would Dept. of Economic Security know if someone is in jail and cancel their Food Stamp benefits?
Q. My mom's boyfriend started receiving food stamp benefits in July 2009 for the first time. He gave her his EBT card and PIN for her to use anytime, because he is living with her. Recently, he just got arrested and he is currently in jail for the next 8 months for prior DUI warrants. Would the Department of Economic Security know that he is in jail and cancel his benefits, because she was hoping to use his food stamps this month and his account hasn't been updated as of yet?

A. No. Only if someone reports it to the DHS . Then going to jail is not going to stop him from getting hungry. If he is in jail and is not getting out on bond.. He can lose the benefits.

A. Yeah, always keep your last pay stubs for at least a year. Xerox them and mail them in. And that's all on government record if you don't have them anymore or your employer is being a jerk -- Social Security/FICA should know how much you've earned week by week if your employer refuses to cough up your back wage info.

A. Social services considers a house a saleable asset. If she were extremely desperate, they say, she could sell her house and rent an apartment. That isn't always possible, but that's how they reason it. If she has a car worth more than $2000 that would also be considered an asset as well.

A. That's hard to say. You should call the food stamp office and ask them. You might instead turn yourself in, after talking to an attorney, and get this taken care of so you don't always have it hanging over your head. You could move to another state, less likely they will check across state lines. In jail, you get free food.Sorry, that was not very sympathetic. They do have to provide you with a free attorney. If you turn yourself in, repeat the mantra to them, I'm not talking, I want a lawyer, until they give you a lawyer. I'm sure you aren't the first one to have something like that hanging over their head and need help. Some states are more punitive than others and use social services to find criminals. A. Yes, but you have to go to a store that is approved. You can call the store but I would make sure before loading up on groceries only to find out they don't take them or you can't use it. Usually Walmart is a safe bet, as long as it's a super walmart. HTH Also some states MAY still have the type of card that has the microchip in them. Those can NOT be used state to state but if you have the kind that as the magnetic stripe on the back (like a credit card to be used in the credit card machine at checkout) it should be able to be used.
